The manufacturer was the sole bidder for a Pentagon assignment to manufacture High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) over a five-year period.

Lockheed Martin Corp. has drawn a new U.S. Army contract worth $861 million to manufacture High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems and provide related services over a five-year period. The contract was awarded to the sole bidder participating in an internet-based auction.

HIMARS is a lightweight mobile launcher that fires a range of ballistic weapons: Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets, Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missiles, the next-generation Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), and Extended-Range GMLRS rockets.

The system is transportable via C-130 and larger aircraft for rapid deployment, with a launcher loader module and fire-control system mounted on a five-ton truck chassis.

A specialized armored cab provides additional protection to three crew members that operate the system.

Each HIMARS launcher and carrier unit carries an estimated cost of $4.4 million.

According to a Pentagon announcement, the contracted work will be assigned as individual production orders are received. The contract will run through May 31, 2026.
